1) Fill out weekly vocab lists – I recommend that students fold sheet in half and write English on right side so they can fold it and quiz themselves on the Spanish without seeing the English.
2) Make flashcards – English on one side, Spanish on the other. Go through flash cards daily. Kids can look through alone, be quizzed by parents, or quiz each other. Going from Spanish to English is easier, so I recommend doing that first.
3) Concentration – write all words on 3x5 cards in both English and Spanish. Lay cards face down, try to find matches (English to Spanish). Most matches wins.
4) Word Race - say Spanish words (can also show flashcard), kids race to say the English word first. (can also be done English to Spanish)
5) Matamoscas (Flyswatters) – We will be playing this in class, but it can also be done at home. Write words in Spanish randomly scattered on a piece of paper. Say one of the words in English; the first kid to point at the word in Spanish gets a point. In class, I usually put the words on a wall and kids have to swat the word with a flyswatter. (can also be done English to Spanish)
6) Libros (books) – this is great for younger or artistic students. Make books with the new vocab words. On each page, write a new Spanish word and draw a picture to go with it. Then have the kids read you their book.
7) Crossword Puzzles – a crossword puzzle maker can be found at http://www.varietygames.com/CW/ Make clues to the difficulty level of your choice. I can also make crosswords for you, if you prefer.
8) Word Search Puzzle – these are great to get kids saying/picturing the Spanish words over and over in their heads while searching for them. Make one at http://edhelper.com/wordfind_free.htm
Have the English words in the word box, then kids have to find the Spanish. I can also make these for you.
9) Do anything else you think of – be creative! Don’t forget to share with everyone else if you come up with something that works well J
